The Anatomy of a Real Hail Strike

Independent forensic testing (Haag Engineering standards) defines functional hail damage by three physical characteristics:

• Fractured Mat: Hail impact crushes granules into the asphalt and fractures the internal fiberglass scrim. When felt with a fingertip, the bruise feels soft and spongy like an overripe peach.
• Random Pattern: Hail strikes are distributed randomly across the roof plane with directional bias matching the storm path, often accompanied by spatter marks on metal vents, gutters, and AC condenser fins.

What Shingle Blistering Looks Like

Blistering is caused by trapped volatile gases or moisture escaping from poorly ventilated attic spaces during extreme summer heat.
